Growing up in yuppy Marin County, compensating?' coepus were common as pickups at a rodeo. Almost obviously, it diverted my desire not for the car Steve Perry or Sammy Hagar was flying by in- (it just seemed a little pathetic) but for the idea of a trashed, diesel Benz 220d or even better a Citroen DS wagon. Old money, lived well. Yet the only high-end coupe I ever really lusted for was the Aston Martin Vantage that Grace Slick drove to the [discount] Red Cart Market. Maybe because a woman didn't need to compensate- or maybe just because the Aston was just strong and timeless, in all ways. How Aston-Martin has managed to keep the balance of virility and grace is a testimony to their excellence and restraint.
