Yes, it's very confusing the way that Canon nbeumrs their models. The SD models are their ultra compact, mostly metal bodied 'designer' cameras. These are excellent cameras that provide fast operation and performance and perfect if you want a good looking and small sized point & shoot camera. They also usually have a higher res. LCD than other models and some newer models also offer HD movie recording (1280 x 720).The 'A series are their budget models (but still offer excellent image quality, especially in good light). Some models might have slightly lesser performance than other models (slow flash recycle times, etc.). The SX series are a mixture of budget ones or ones with a few extra features, or manual control or lots of extra zoom, etc. Canon's very first waterproof camera is the D10, so that's the start of the 'D' range, I guess.Canon also used to have an 'S' series camera, but haven't released one in a while. But, they have just announced a new S series model (S90). It's probably just under the 'G' series for price and features, etc.So, it all comes down to what particular model you like the look of, how much zoom you want and whether you want manual control and how much you are prepared to pay, etc. etc. The link below gives you a list of ALL Canon models and dates that they were announced, so you'll get some idea of which order these models come in good luck
